Pink Eye

You may have heard pink eye referred to as conjunctivitis. Pink eye is a condition that occurs when there is inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye. The white part of the eye has a thin, clear tissue over it called the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva lines the inside of the eyelid. Pink eye is highly contagious and spreads quickly, especially in school-age children. As a result, they tend to get it often. A virus, bacteria, or allergies can cause pink eye. Fortunately, pink eye does not typically cause long-term damage as a result of pink eye. However, it should be treated as quickly as possible. If you think you or your child has pink eye and are in Alexandria, VA, please contact Sina J Sabet MD PC.

Pink Eye Symptoms

There are a number of common symptoms associated with pink eye, depending on what is causing pink eye. These symptoms include redness in one or both eyes. You may also experience itchy eyes or notice that you have a gritty feeling in your eyes. You could see discharge seeping from your eyes that can crust overnight while you are sleeping. You may also experience eye tearing when you have pink eye.

Pink Eye Treatment

There is a treatment for pink eye, depending on the cause. When it is caused by a virus, similar to a cold, it has to run its course. This could take up to seven days. When a bacteria cause it, an ophthalmologist may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment that clears up the infection. This could also take up to seven days. When your pink eye is caused by an irritant, you should use water to flush the eye for at least five minutes. It may take up to four hours for the pink eye to improve.
