Blepharoplasty

Sina J. Sabet, MD Offers Blepharoplasty for Patients in Alexandria

As people age, the muscles and tissues around the eyes may grow weaker and thinner. This problem can cause drooping of the eyelids, which can interfere with normal vision and make you look older than you are. At Sina J. Sabet, MD’s practice in Alexandria, VA, we provide blepharoplasty for our patients, as well as other types of eye surgery.

The Problem of Drooping Eyelids

Drooping eyelids are a common problem. Unfortunately, the sagging of skin above the eyes can impede your normal vision, causing blurring or narrowing of the field of vision.

Drooping eyelids also give your face a tired, haggard look. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that was developed to lift the eyelids and improve sagging under the eyes, so you can focus your vision properly and look more rested.

The Eyelid Repair Procedure

Your surgeon will do an eye exam and carefully evaluate your health to ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. On the day of surgery, you will receive an anesthetic that puts you to sleep during the procedure. An incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the muscle tightened to help open up the eyes. If necessary, an incision will be made in the lower lid at the lash line, where the scar will be easily concealed, and the excess fat and skin are removed. The incisions are then closed, and loose gauze placed over the eyes.

Blepharoplasty Aftercare

Your surgeon will provide complete instructions to care for your eyes after surgery. You may be given medications to prevent infection and aid healing. There may be some bruising and swelling after the procedure that will gradually dissipate. Cold compresses may be recommended to reduce swelling. If sutures were used, they will be removed a week after surgery. You will be required to come in for follow-up visits to ensure that the incisions are healing properly. Full healing occurs over several months.
