Astigmatism

An Eye Exam with Our Ophthalmologist Can Determine Your Astigmatism Treatment

Astigmatism, a condition that causes blurred vision, is one of the most common vision problems that ophthalmology doctors treat. An eye exam with our ophthalmologist in Alexandria is needed to diagnose astigmatism. Here's what you can expect when you come to our Sina J. Sabet, MD, PC clinic for astigmatism exam and treatment.

Eye Exams Diagnose Astigmatism

Astigmatism results when the curvature of the eye's cornea is "off" a little bit, resulting in blurry vision. These curvature errors cause light to refract at an incorrect angle, making it difficult for the eye to focus what it is seeing. Astigmatism can be corrected in several different ways, but a comprehensive eye exam is required first to diagnose it.

Our ophthalmologist will test your visual acuity during an eye exam. The exact curvature of the cornea will be measured with a keratometer. Refraction tests will also be used to measure how your eyes can focus on light. Once the precise curvature of the cornea and other factors are determined, our ophthalmologist can talk about the various treatment options for astigmatism.

Eye Care Options for Astigmatism

Correction of astigmatism will result in you having better vision, with the elimination of some or all of the blurriness. However, clear vision may not be possible in advanced cases of astigmatism. Here are some of the most common corrective options that our doctor of ophthalmology can provide:

  • Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses: Eyeglasses and contacts are designed to compensate for astigmatism by correcting the angle at which light hits the cornea, resulting in clearer vision.
  • Orthokeratology: This treatment involves wearing rigid contact lenses to reshape the cornea to correct your vision. These lenses are typically worn overnight for a limited period and then removed in the morning. Orthokeratology is not a permanent solution, however. It is used for mild cases of astigmatism.
  • LASIK Surgery: LASIK is a common surgical procedure that removes tissue from the interior of the cornea to give the eye a more proper shape and correct a patient's vision. Our ophthalmologist will talk to you about LASIK to determine whether you are a good candidate for this highly effective astigmatism treatment.
