Is LASIK Right for You?

If you have worn glasses or contact lenses for years, or if you have just recently been diagnosed with myopia and you don't want to deal with the hassle of corrective lenses, you might be considering LASIK surgery. LASIK isn't the right procedure for everyone, however. It's important to know what factors can make you a good candidate for this type of surgery. We at Sina J Sabet MD PC in Alexandria, VA, know a lot about if you should get LASIK surgery from our eye surgeon.

Conditions Necessary for LASIK Surgery to Take Place

To start, a person's eyes must stop growing for this type of surgery to be successful. This usually means that a person must be at least 18 years old to qualify for surgery.

Next, a person must be able to be approved by the ophthalmologist who is performing the surgery. The eye surgeon will consider a potential patient's medical history and current health condition to approve him or her for surgery. Patients should be in generally good health. Conditions that could affect the outcome of the surgery such as diabetes or heart problems should be shared with the eye doctor or ophthalmologist. While these conditions do not automatically exclude a patient from having LASIK, they can make the surgery more complicated and may need to be accommodated for by the eye surgeon.

Finally, a potential patient will need to show that they can follow the pre and post operation instructions. Patients will need to administer their own eye drops and look for signs of infection. They will also need to keep and schedule several appointments before and after the surgery. Immediately after the surgery, a patient will need someone to drive them home. Typically, the name and contact information of this person will be asked for by the eye surgeon or ophthalmologist before a person undergoes surgery.
