Optical Coherence Tomography

OCT Machine

OCT stands for 'optical coherence tomography', and the OCT machine is a useful, non-invasive, non-contact, imaging and biomicroscopic device that diagnoses various eye problems. It uses light waves to take cross-sectional retinal images in high-resolution. Our optometry professional at Eye Site can analyze the layers of the retina to gain insight into various biological tissues in real-time. At Eye Site, we have years of experience using this technology to quickly and accurately diagnose a myriad of ophthalmic diseases and conditions for residents of Houston, Katy, and the surrounding areas.

Technological Advancements

For more than a century now, technological advancements in the medical industry have been enormous. People are significantly less plagued by illnesses due to the prior limitation of knowledge and technology. The OCT machine searches deeply within an individual's eyes to find and detect present and potential problems. And as a result, eye doctors can begin addressing these issues right away. Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent patients from losing their eyesight.

What to Expect While During an OCT Exam

Our eye doctor will walk you through the process before your exam. The exam will begin with our eye doctor dilating your pupils with eye drops to prevent your pupils from contracting when exposed to the light of the OCT machine. This process is painless. Following the exam, your vision may be blurry and you may have difficulty focusing. Sunglasses are needed for a few hours after this procedure to protect your eyes from light sensitivity. The entire OCT machine scanning process lasts between five and ten minutes.
