Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that typically affects older adults. It occurs at a gradual breakdown of the macula (located in the center of the retina) breaks down, which can compromise your central vision. At Eye Site Texas in Houston & Katy, our eye doctors answer common questions regarding macular degeneration.

.

Is Macular Degeneration Always Age-Related?

Typically, this condition will affect over 65, and it's often referred to as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. In some rare instances, it can affect the younger population or even children.

Who Is at Risk for Macular Degeneration?

Adults over 65, smokers, and those with a family history of macular degeneration have an increased risk. Some certain drugs/medications can put you at higher risk, and it's always important to convey this information to our eye doctors during an exam.

Can Macular Degeneration Be Prevented?

Even with the advancements made in AMD treatment, there isn't a specific reason why this condition occurs. Some research suggests that increased exposure to UV light can further progress, so wearing sunglasses also becomes essential. Furthermore, proactive measures should also be taken in nutrition with a diet rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

Are There Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

It's essential to understand how vital a comprehensive eye exam is, especially as you get older. There are virtually no symptoms in the early stages, but as macular degeneration worsens, you may notice:

  • Wavy or cloudy vision
  • More difficulty driving at night
  • The appearance of shadows in central vision

Are There Different Forms of Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is broken down into two forms, dry and wet, with the former accounting for roughly 90 percent of all cases. The macula breaks down over time and causes the central vision problems it's known for. Conversely, the wet form is much less common but is far more dangerous. It occurs when blood vessels underneath the retina leak and can become a severe medical condition that needs treatment immediately.

Is There A Cure for Macular Degeneration?

There is treatment available for macular degeneration, but presently there isn't a cure. It's crucial for early diagnosis, so our eye doctors can help manage the condition before it worsens.
