What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in the United States. In fact, more than 10 million Americans have the condition, and yet it is often not heard of or spoken about until a diagnosis occurs. It is an incurable eye disease. Macular degeneration occurs as a result of the deterioration of the very central part of the retina. This is the part of your eye, located inside the very back layer of it, that records the images that you see. It then sends those images to the optic nerve to the brain, so you can understand what you are seeing.

However, over time, the cells of the macular begin to deteriorate. This leads to images that are less than clear and, over time, it leads to disease progression until blindness occurs.

Treating Macular Degeneration

When you come in to see our Fort Worth or Lubbock eye doctor, we'll offer options for treating macular degeneration. As noted, there is no way to cure this condition. However, we can help you to learn what steps to take to reduce the risk that the condition will worsen and even slow down that progression significantly. This may include making changes to your diet (foods that cause high blood pressure and high glucose levels are not good for you). It may also avoid improving your overall health. We generally recommend getting regular exercise and not smoking.

It is also important for those who are at risk of developing macular degeneration or those who are already experiencing symptoms to take measures to protect the eyes from UV light. Wearing sunglasses and not looking directly at the sun are very important steps in protecting your vision.

Our team can also offer other option that may help you including anti-VEGF therapy, which includes injections into the eye to improve overall blood vessels. Some laser treatments may be beneficial to some patients as well. Treatments such as laser photocoagulation are highly effective at helping to reduce the risk of severe vision loss.
