Strabismus

TREATMENT AND CAUSES OF STRABISMUS EXPLAINED AT THE VISION CENTER

At The Vision Center, we provide comprehensive care for vision and eye health to our patients. Among the many conditions we treat is strabismus. In this visual problem, the eyes are not aligned properly, causing the eyes to look as though they are wandering or crossed. When you come into our optometry offices, we can help diagnose and treat strabismus.

What Are the Types of Strabismus?

There are numerous types of strabismus. About four percent of the United States population has some type of strabismus. The most common forms are the following:

    • Esotropia - there is an inward turning of the eyes to create the crossed eye look.
    • Extropia - there is an outward turning of the eyes, often called wall-eyed.
    • Vertical Strabismus - one of the eyes is abnormally higher than normal.
    • Hypotropia -  the abnormal eye is lower than the normal eye.

When to See an Eye Doctor

If you believe you or your child is suffering from strabismus, visit our eye doctor in Fort Worth or Lubbock for an appointment. Our team will provide a full exam and provide information on a possible treatment. It’s important to get help for strabismus because, if it can be treated, it can improve a child’s overall development and minimize vision concerns later.

What Causes Strabismus?

The causes of strabismus can very. The condition can develop in otherwise healthy individuals as children. It is more commonly found in individuals suffering from hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, brain tumors, or down syndrome. In addition, this condition can occur in adults. Strokes and trauma are the most common causes of strabismus in adult onset cases.

Treatment for Strabismus

When you visit your eye doctor in Fort Worth or Lubbock TX, our team will provide you with available treatment for strabismus based on the individual circumstances you face. The goal of this type of treatment is to improve the alignment of the eyes. This will allow the eyes to work together more effectively. The treatment options for strabismus may include:

    • The use of special eyeglasses designed to correct vision
    • Eye exercises to improve muscle strength and function
    • Prism treatment
    • Eye muscle surgery

Individuals who do not get treatment for strabismus are at a higher risk of developing complications to vision. We may also need to treat other concerns with the eyes prior to treating strabismus. For example, if your child has amblyopia or lazy eye, that may require treatment first. When you visit our Lubbock optometry offices, we’ll create a customized treatment plan to address the causes and symptoms that you or your child has.
