Many patients come to us with concerns about glaucoma and are concerned about symptoms that they are experiencing difficulty with their vision, and are concerned that they may be in the early stage of an eye condition. What causes glaucoma?

This eye condition is typically associated with age and develops when there is increased pressure on the optic nerve. Age and hereditary factors can cause the aqueous humor fluid to collect, rather than drain, which increases the pressure when the ducts are blocked.

How can I tell if I have glaucoma?

Unfortunately, the symptoms of glaucoma develop very slowly and the best way to detect this condition in its early stages is through regular eye exams. Signs and symptoms such as blurry vision, headaches, and feeling pressure behind the eyes do not typically appear in the earliest stages of the condition.

Can my optometrist treat me for this condition?

Yes, your optometrist at The Vision Center offers comprehensive and effective treatment for eye conditions including glaucoma. In cases where the drops are ineffective, oral medications can be prescribed. Trabeculoplasty, a laser procedure, can be performed if medications are not effective.

What are the most common treatments for glaucoma?

When it is detected in the earliest, most treatable stages, glaucoma is treated with medicated eye drops. These drops help to reduce the amount of fluid that the eyes produce as well as increase the effectiveness of the drainage process.

Does my glaucoma diagnosis mean that I will have to undergo eye surgery?

If medicated eye drops and oral medications are not effective, your eye doctor will perform a Trabeculoplasty, which is a fairly simple and straightforward out-patient laser procedure. Patients who are experiencing any eye issues, or who have not had regular eye exams are encouraged to contact our office today to schedule an appointment. 

Can glaucoma cause blindness?

If left untreated, yes glaucoma can lead to a decrease in your level of vision and blindness. As you grow older regular eye care becomes more important as many serious eye conditions do not show symptoms in the early stages.
