When to See an Optometrist for Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a condition in which the eyelids become inflamed. It often impacts the area where the eyelashes grow and generally impacts both eyes at the same time. The causes of blepharitis are not always clear, but generally, this condition occurs when the oil glands located at the very bottom of the eyelashes become clogged. This creates irritation and inflammation. It can also be brought on by other diseases as well. Though this condition is treatable, it can become chronic. This type of eyelid inflammation generally will not improve on its own fully.

Symptoms for Blepharitis

If you believe you may have this condition, consider the following most common symptoms for blepharitis:

    • Red eyes
    • Watery eyes
    • Feeling of a gritty substance in your eyes
    • Itchy or burning eyes
    • Sticking of the eyelids
    • Swollen eyelids
    • Crusting or flaking near the eyes
    • Eyelashes that are not growing normally
    • Loss of eyelashes

If you have these symptoms, seek out care from our Fort Worth or Lubbock optometry offices right away. In some cases, you can see improvement in your symptoms right away. If you have any significant pain or loss of vision, do not delay in getting immediate medical help.

Treatment for Blepharitis

When you visit our optometry offices, our goal will be to first diagnose the eyelid inflammation as this condition. Once we know this is the condition you have, treatment for blepharitis will involve several steps. First, you’ll need to learn how to properly wash your eyes and how to use a warm compress at home. This is the first step in relieving the symptoms you have. Then, our treatment may include:

    • Medications for the infection, such as eye drops, creams, and ointments; antibiotics are not often beneficial in topical form but we may recommend an oral pill.
    • Inflammation control through the use of anti-inflammatory medications.
    • Immune system support, such as the use of topical cyclosporine, a type of medication that can reduce symptoms.
    • Treatment for the underlying cause such as dermatitis, rosacea, or other diseases.

When you see your optometrist, our first step will be to treat the symptoms you have. We will provide you with the least aggressive treatment first. Then, we may recommend that you see your eye doctor a few days or weeks for follow-up.
