Learn more about healthy aging and how you can protect your eyes from conditions due to getting older.

How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam to Check for Eye Health Issues Due to Aging?

We recommend getting an eye exam to test for age-related eye disease every year. This allows our optometrist to look for early indicators of eye diseases, such as AMD or glaucoma. If you schedule a routine eye exam, our eye doctor will be able to check your eyes for diseases caused by aging. Treatment can begin immediately to help slow any disease progression.

What Are Age-Related Eye Diseases?

Age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma are two eye diseases that have very few symptoms. Yet, if left untreated, both can lead to permanent vision loss. Other age-related diseases include cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy only affects individuals who have diabetes.

How Can I Protect My Eyes from Sun Damage?

The sun emits ultraviolet radiation, or UV, rays that are damaging to the eyeball. This damage includes sunburn of the eye, which is known as photokeratitis. Symptoms of severely sunburned eyes, according to the Discovery Eye Foundation, include red, burning, itchy eyes that feel gritty and watery. To protect against eye damage, make sure to wear sunglasses provided by our optometrist that are 100 UV ray protected.
