The Importance of Regular Eye and Vision Exams

So, why are routine eye and vision exams such an important part of your health? Take a minute to consider the other preventative measures you take for your health on a regular basis. From seeing your dentist for cleanings and exams to scheduling an annual physical with your doctor, eye exams are really no different. You only get one set of eyes in this life, so why not take care of them the best you can? An annual eye exam is the most basic thing you can do to protect and even preserve your eye and vision health in the long-term.

Even if you haven't noticed any changes in your eye and vision health, an annual eye exam may alert your doctor to underlying problems, including eye conditions and diseases that can be treated or managed when caught early. Furthermore, an annual eye exam allows us to make sure you're up-to-date with your corrective vision prescription so you can always see as clearly as possible! And finally, your annual eye exam gives you that little bit of added peace of mind when it comes to your ocular health.

What to Expect From Your Woodstock Eye Exam

If you've never had an eye exam or if it's been awhile since your last exam, you may be wondering what to expect when you come into Oxford Optometry for your appointment. You'll begin with a consultation with Dr. Andreasen, which will allow us to get more insight into your family history and give you a chance to bring up any questions or concerns you may have. From there, we'll move onto a series of tests and evaluations, including:

  • Vision testing
  • Eye function testing
  • Physical examination

At the end of your appointment, our doctor will review findings with you, provide you with an updated prescription (if needed), and address any concerns or recommendations for further treatment or diagnostics. From there, you'll be good to go!

Eye Exam Frequently Asked Questions

Regular eye exams are an essential part of your overall health care. Protecting your vision and treating problems as they arise is important if you want to have the best possible vision. Eye exams can help catch a variety of eye health and vision problems before they become bigger problems, and also ensure that you have crystal clear vision. Your vision changes, often in less than a year, so regular appointments are necessary if you wear glasses or contacts.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions people typically have about eye exams:

When Should You Have Your First Eye Exam?

It's suggested that your child should have their first eye exam by six months of age. This exam will make sure your child's vision is normal and that their eyes are healthy.

How Often Should You Have Your Eyes Examined?

Adults should have their eyes examined at least every two years. For adults age 60 and over, yearly exams are recommended. This may vary depending on a variety of factors including your vision, any medical conditions, etc.

What Happens During An Eye Exam?

After completing questions regarding your medical and family medical history the doctor will ask about any concerns, issues or symptoms. Then you'll perform a visual acuity test that will determine if you are in need of glasses, or if your vision has changed from the last exam. After applying numbing drops to the eyes, the doctor will measure your eye pressure. The doctor will use a series of tests to thoroughly examine the eyes to make sure they are in good health and to check for signs of any problems. After this, the doctor will discuss the findings and talk to you about the possibility of glasses or address any concerns that have come up.

What Happens If I Need Glasses?

If you need glasses, you'll usually get started right away, typically choosing frames and placing an order. When the glasses are ready, you'll come back to the clinic to make sure they are fitted properly.

Will My Glasses Prescription Work For Contact Lenses?

The prescription isn't the same. Even if you have a current eyeglasses prescription, you'll need an exam to get a separate contact lens prescription. If you are considering contacts lenses, be sure to bring that up with the optometrist.
