Ortho-K FAQs

Orthokeratology: A Gentle Approach to Modifying Myopia

Orthokeratology is the only application of special contact lenses that gently reshape your cornea to change your vision. This type of vision therapy is non-invasive and very helpful for people who can't wear glasses or contacts during the day. Oxford Optometry in Woodstock offers orthokeratology services, and our optometrist can fit you with contacts appropriate for your eyes.

Orthokeratology

What Does Orthokeratology Do?

In this treatment, special gas-permeable contact lenses are fitted for your eyes. The lenses are worn overnight while you sleep. During this time, the lenses gently reshape your corneas. This is used mostly for myopia, or nearsightedness, but sometimes you can use the treatment for other conditions like astigmatism. Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occasionally benefits from orthokeratology treatment, too.

The reshaping actually creates clearer vision for you in the morning when you remove the lenses. For most people, vision throughout the day is much better. However, the effect is temporary, and you need to keep wearing the lenses while you sleep.

Why Use Ortho-k Instead of Conventional Glasses or Contacts?

This all sounds a bit much, doesn't it? Why not just wear glasses? Well, for one thing, many people find themselves in situations where they can't wear glasses or contacts. Maybe their jobs are very dusty, or they can't risk having anything fall off their face or out of their eyes while on the job. Other people simply don't like having things in front of their face and they may have had bad experiences with traditional contacts. With orthokeratology, the lenses are safely behind closed eyelids at home.

Are the Effects Permanent? How Long Does Orthokeratology Take?

As mentioned, the effects are temporary. The gas-permeable lenses temporarily reshape your corneas to give you clearer vision, but then the corneas gradually return to their old shape. You can keep using the treatment as long as your prescription is mild to moderate, and no other physical issues occur with your eyes.
