LASIK Basics
LASIK involves using a laser beam to cut a very thin flap in the patient’s cornea.
The eye surgeon lifts the flap and pulls out tissue from the cornea to change its shape. For nearsighted patients, the surgery flattens the cornea, and for farsighted patients, LASIK makes the cornea steeper.
LASIK is surgery performed on an outpatient basis. The surgeon actually programs a computer to guide how the laser will reshape your cornea. At this point, the eye doctor will have you look at a target while the laser beam uses light pulses to adjust the cornea over a period of approximately five minutes.
Evaluating and Referring Patients for LASIK Surgery
Oxford Optometry is led by our chief optometrist is Dr. Sarah Andreasen, who will consult with you for evaluation and possible referral for LASIK to treat symptoms of astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia.
It’s a surgical approach for one or both eyes that uses a laser beam instead of conventional surgical blades. LASIK stands for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis.
The optometrist will sit down with you to discuss your lifestyle and what you hope to get out of LASIK surgery, and then will conduct a comprehensive exam of your eyes and vision.
An examination is required before possible referral for LASIK treatment. The doctor must verify that your prescription is stable as well as determine that you are healthy enough to be ready for surgery. We run diagnostic tests on your eyes during eligibility assessment.
Caring for Patients after LASIK Surgery
After we provide an examination and referral, you will need to arrange for post-operative care with a follow-up visit with us one day after your LASIK surgery.
At this point, the optometrist will develop a schedule of additional follow-up appointments for the next six months. It’s recommended that all LASIK patients come in for a full examination one year following the procedure. Of course, the team at Oxford Optometry will be on hand to answer any questions you might have during recovery.
