Ortho-K

Fix Eye Issues with Orthokeratology

Oxford Optometry in Woodstock, ON, are eye doctors that are experts in the corneal reshaping technology called Ortho-K, or Orthokeratology.

Ortho-K (also known as accelerated overnight orthokeratology) is an eye-correction technique to improve your vision. This non-surgical procedure works by reshaping the curvature of your eye - also known as cornea - to alter how light focuses on the retina.

.

Oxford Optometry will work with patients who wish to correct their eyesight but would prefer to avoid daytime eyeglass wearing, contact lenses, and even refractive surgery.

How does Ortho-K work?

Your Optometrist may use Ortho K to improve your vision - without the need for surgery.

The Oxford Optometry eyecare specialist will design a pair of contact lenses. These lenses will gently reshape your cornea in order to improve your vision - while you sleep. You put the custom Ortho K contact lenses in before bed, and over time, the lenses will correct your daytime vision.

Ortho-K can be used to treat:

  • Near-sightedness
  • Far-sightedness
  • Presbyopia
  • Astigmatism

Corneas are made up of flexible tissue that focuses light onto your retinas. This light refraction is responsible for the process of overall focusing, helping you see things clearly.

The process of Orthokeratology will begin with a measurement of your cornea. Your eyecare specialist will use a corneal topographer to design a rigid, gas-permeable contact lens. These lenses are strong enough to reshape your cornea but are designed to also allow the passing of oxygen, which keeps your eyes healthy. This procedure can be done in the Woodstock offices of Oxford Optometry

Who can get Ortho-K?

Because Ortho-K is non-invasive, it is often a better choice than LASIK or PRK for those seeking to fix their vision.

Children are a great candidate for Ortho-K. Their eyes have not finished developing and are ineligible for laser eye surgery. Young adults may see more benefits from Ortho-K than laser eye surgery, as well, especially if they suffer from other eye problems.

Adults who suffer from chronic dry eyes, or work in environments that are not conducive to wearing contacts or eyeglasses, may see Ortho-K as the preferable option.

How long does it take for Ortho-K to work?

On average, a patient will need three sets of orthokeratology lenses over the course of the entire treatment procedure.

The end goal is 20/20 vision, but results will vary based on your original eyesight, continued use of the lenses, and type of lens needed. Many patients will begin to see results in as few as two days.
