Progressive Lenses

.

Have you ever guessed someone's age by looking at their glasses? Those telltale lines and segments on the lenses indicate the need for bifocals or trifocals to combat presbyopia, an affliction that begins in middle age. If you're starting to have visual focusing problems from this same condition, you may not like the idea of advertising your age in this manner, or having to see around lines on your lenses. That's why you should consider the no-line benefits of progressive lenses, which we can provide for you here at Oxford Optometry in Woodstock.

When Single-Vision Glasses Aren't Sufficient

In the past, you may have enjoyed successful vision correction for your farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism through the use of simple, single-vision lenses. These lenses correct for a single refractive disorder, clarifying vision at a specific distance range. Now that you're in your 40's, however, you may be straining to read fine print, or experiencing blurred vision when your shift from near focus to distance focus. This common problem is called presbyopia, and it's caused by a stiffening of the lenses in your eyes. The stiffer lenses can't change focus or maintain near focus as easily as they once did.

Traditionally, bifocals and trifocals have resolved this problem for countless people with presbyopia. The inclusion of two or three separate corrective fields give you sharp near, distance, and intermediate vision by giving your eyes separate segments for each field. Unfortunately, the separate segments make for a somewhat unnatural viewing experience, while also making it obvious that you have "old eyes."

No-Line Multifocal Glasses from Our Woodstock Optometrist

Progressive lenses are a type of multifocal lenses that don't include separate segments for near, intermediate, and distance vision. Instead, they offer a progressive gradation from your distance prescription (located toward the top of the lenses) to your near prescription (located toward the bottom). Simply flicking your eyes upward or downward gives you access to the ideal corrective field for your needs. Our Woodstock optometrist can have these lenses made to suit your individual pupil positions. We can also advise you on how to get accustomed to seeing through these new lenses.
