Blue Light Vision FAQs

Here are the most commonly asked questions about blue light vision.

What is Blue Light Vision?

How many hours a day do you spend looking at your smartphone? What about a tablet, LED monitor, or television? That digital screen time is just one of the many ways your eyes are exposed to all the colors in the light spectrum. Blue has the shortest wavelength and is the highest visible color, and today there is increasing concern over the long-term effects of exposure to man-made blue light.

Because your eye is not good at blocking blue light, almost all of it reaches your retina. The effect of the exposure is cumulative and has sent people to the eye doctor and optometrist looking for answers.

What Kind of Problems Can Blue Light Vision Cause?

Research shows that too much exposure to blue light could lead to a number of problems.

In the beginning, your repeated exposure to blue light could leave your eyes tired and strained or cause headaches. If you watch television or use your smartphone before going to bed, the exposure may lead to trouble falling asleep.

In the long-term, the Canadian Association of Optometrists says blue light vision can lead to more serious problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

How is Blue Light Vision Treated?

There are a number of things you can do immediately to protect your eyes from blue light. This includes decreasing the amount of screen time and overall use of digital devices or adding filters to reduce the blue light given off by these devices.

Our doctors in Oxford can prescribe eyewear such as blue light lenses that block blue light.

If you have a condition such as presbyopia, or farsightedness, we can find also find a solution that meets your needs.

Finally, if you spend a lot of time outside and are looking to block blue light from the sun, we can recommend products that will work for you.
