What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer Vision Syndrome is not just one problem, but many eye problems related to the prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-readers, and cell phones. Computer users typically spend seven hours or more a day on their digital device at work and home. As the number of jobs involving computer use rises, so do reports of vision problems and ocular discomfort. Poor lighting and posture, poor computer design, and workplace ergonomics contribute to the problem.

Computer Vision Syndrome is a repetitive motion injury caused when your eyes move back and forth again and again. When you work, you may look at your computer and then at a document and then back at the computer. Your eyes react by focusing and refocusing. The effort cause muscle strain much like the muscle strain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.  The contrast, flicker, and glare on a computer screen add to the problem.

If you work at a computer, you may notice visual discomfort and related symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome such as:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Double Vision
  • Dry, red eyes
  • Eye irritation
  • Headaches
  • Neck or back pain

Why is Computers Vision Important?

Many industries use computers, and their use is rising. Statistics indicate that 50 of computer users complain of some degree of symptoms. Computer Vision Syndrome can contribute to a decrease in productivity and job satisfaction.

Tips on Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

There are several ways you can help reduce Computers Vision Syndrome. One technique is the 20-20-20 rule - simply take a 20-second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

While you may not need eyeglasses to correct your vision, an optometrist can prescribe glasses specifically for computer use. These glasses have special lens designs, lens powers, or lens tints to maximize your visual abilities and comfort.

Your optometrist can prescribe vision therapy or vision training. These eye movement, eye focusing, and eye teaming exercises train your eyes and brain to work together. Improving working conditions such as lighting, ergonomics (proper position of chair, desk, tools, and monitor), and regular rest breaks.
