Pediatric Vision Exams

There are many people who grow up going to the doctor once per year for an annual physical as well as the dentist twice per year for regular cleanings. Sadly, there are many people who forget to go to the eye doctor once per year for an annual exam as well. It is important for everyone to take care of their eyes; however, many kids do not go to the eye doctor unless they are having trouble seeing. There are several reasons why vision exams are important for kids.

First, there are some optical issues in kids that might arise without showing any symptoms at all. This means that people could have something wrong with their eyes and not know it. A visit to the eye doctor provides the eye doctor with a chance to catch issues with children's eyes that might have been overlooked. Kids may not even know they have a problem. The sooner these issues are caught, the better the chance that someone can protect their vision.

Furthermore, annual vision exams are important for updating people’s prescriptions. There are millions of people who require corrective lenses for issues such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Over time, kids' prescriptions might change as they grow. It is important for the eye doctor to examine someone’s eyes and make sure the prescription does not have to be updated. This is important for allowing people to see clearly.

What Happens at a Pediatric Vision Exam?

When someone shows up for a vision exam, there are several processes that will unfold. First, the eye doctor is going to ask someone to read something called a Snellen chart with both eyes, then each eye separately. After this, the optometrist will check each visual field separately to look for gaps in someone’s vision. The optometrist will also use something that resembles a small pen to check the pressure behind each eye individually. This is done to ensure someone is not developing a serious eye disease called glaucoma. Finally, the optometrist will also dilate someone’s eyes. This will allow him or her to look at the optic nerves, blood vessels, and retinas for signs of issues. It is important for everyone to have this exam done annually.
