Blurry Vision

Blurry vision is the most common vision problem. Here is what our optometrist in Anchorage and Palmer, Dr. Bancroft, wants you to know about blurry vision.

Symptoms of Blurry Vision

Blurry vision isn't a loss of vision. It's not seeing as clearly and sharply as you did before. When blurry vision comes on slowly and seems to be stable, you need to be seen by your eye doctor. When blurry vision comes on suddenly, especially if it occurs in just one eye, you need emergency medical attention right away.

When do you need medical attention right away?

- Your vision becomes blurry suddenly, and you are a diabetic on insulin. (Check your blood sugar levels!)

- You are experiencing blurry vision and blind spots, areas in your field of vision where you see nothing at all.

- You are experiencing eye pain. This includes any eye pain, whether or not you are moving your eyes.

- You have severe loss of vision in just one eye.

Causes of Blurry Vision

Most of the time, blurry vision is a sign that you need glasses. You might have:

- Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, which is the inability to see distant objects clearly.

- Presbyopia, also known as "farsightedness," which is the inability of your eyes to focus on objects close to you and occurs in the middle of life.

- Hyperopia, a condition that can occur at any age and allows you to see objects that are far away clearly but interferes with your ability to see objects that are close to you.

Blurry vision can also result from cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or macular degeneration. Regular exams by your eye doctor can detect these problems while they are still treatable.

What An Optometrist Can Do About Blurry Vision

Your optometrist can make sure you get the exact eye care you need. Some cases of blurry vision must be referred to an ophthalmologist for further treatment. But most of the time, the remedy for blurry vision is an update or a new prescription for eyeglasses or contacts or treatment for eye allergies or dry eye disease.
