EYE INFECTIONS

Common Symptoms of Eye Infections

Infection symptoms can vary based on the severity of the infection and the part of the eye that is infected. Some of the more common signs of infection include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Red eyes
  • Pain or soreness around the eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Discharge coming from the eyes

You should contact an optometrist if you've experienced any of these symptoms, especially if your symptoms are accompanied by a fever. After your eye doctor examines your eye, they'll be able to provide you with a diagnosis and treatment that will restore your eye health.

Types of Eye Infections

Eye infections have many causes, and several different types of infections can affect the eye. Some of the more common types of infection include:

Uveitis

This type of infection occurs when the uvea, which is the middle layer of the eye, becomes inflamed. It's typically caused by bacteria or viruses. Signs of uveitis include redness, sore eyes, and blurred or declining vision.

Conjunctivitis

Commonly referred to as pink eye, conjunctivitis occurs when the membrane lining the eyelid becomes inflamed. There are several types of conjunctivitis, including bacterial, viral, and allergic conjunctivitis. Pink eye can be very contagious and is more common in children.

Keratitis

This infection affects the cornea, which is the tissue at the front of the eye that covers the iris and pupil. It's frequently caused by dirty contact lenses, but can also be caused by eye injuries and exposure to bacteria. Keratitis can make it difficult to open the eyes and can also cause symptoms like redness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.

Styes

A stye is a lump that appears around the edge of the eyelid. Styes develop when the oil glands in a person's eyelids become infected. Common causes of styes include touching eyes with dirty hands, wearing dirty contacts, or failing to remove eye makeup.
