Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects the optic nerve. There are often no early warning signs or symptoms, which is why glaucoma has the nickname "the silent thief of sight.” Over time, glaucoma can start to affect your peripheral vision or even your central vision. If left untreated, complete blindness may occur.

Risks for Developing Glaucoma

While anyone can get glaucoma, there are certain risk factors to consider:

  • Those with a family history of the condition
  • Being over the age of 60
  • Previous health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or hypertension
  • Previous eye injuries

Diagnosing Glaucoma

Only a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist can properly diagnose glaucoma. We will evaluate the optic nerve and perform a tonometry test to determine your eye pressure. There could also be the inclusion of a visual field assessment. If this condition is detected, we will provide the best care and treatment options for your glaucoma. Treatment plans may include special eye drops, medication, or a referral for laser surgery.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

There are two main types of glaucoma: open-angle and angle-closure. There are typically no symptoms with open-angle glaucoma. However, angle-closure glaucoma has distinct symptoms, such as intense eye pain, seeing halos around lights, and even vision loss and vomiting. Get medical attention immediately if any of these symptoms occur. Glaucoma cannot be prevented entirely, but there are steps to take to reduce the likelihood. These steps include living an active life, avoiding smoking, and wearing sunglasses when you go outside. Also, be sure to attend annual eye appointments with an optometrist.
