What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

You've probably heard of LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses) surgery and wondered if it's right for you. Chances are you don't really understand what it is. This type of eye surgery uses a laser beam to remove part of the cornea, which is the clear, dome-shaped tissue in front of your eye. In normal vision, this dome shape allows light rays to send clear images to the retina. With nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, the light rays are inaccurately angled, sending light to other places, resulting in blurred vision.
Conditions Treated By LASIK
Nearsightedness or myopia: If your eyeball is longer than average or your cornea curves too abruptly, then light hits in front of the retina, blurring long-range vision. Your short-range vision remains fairly clear.
Farsightedness or hyperopia: If your eyeball is shorter than normal or your cornea is flat, the light will hit behind the retina rather than on it, resulting in blurred short-range vision. Your close-up vision will be blurry, and your long range vision could also be blurry.
Astigmatism: When the cornea bends unevenly, your near and long-range vision will be blurry.
Who Is A Candidate for LASIK?
Dr. Burcham will conduct a thorough examination to determine the health of your eyes. LASIK has good outcomes for those with refractory issues, usually achieving 20/25 vision. However, if you have eye diseases, eye injuries, dry eyes, large pupils, participate in contact sports, or have age-related eye changes, LASIK may not be the right choice for you.
What Is The Recovery Time for LASIK?
Immediately after the surgery, you will need a driver. Your ophthalmologist will send you home to rest and will establish follow-up in 24 to 48 hours. For a few days, you may notice eye discomfort and weeping. Most will notice improved vision between two and seven days, but complete recovery from LASIK surgery could take up to six months.
