An Overview of Common Excisions

There are a number of treatment options that we provide to our patients and one of the most common surgical options we provide is called excisions. These are typically performed on lumps and bumps that are present on the eyelid. These bumps are incredibly common and can be categorized as either benign or malignant (meaning cancerous). Sometimes, we aren’t able to tell whether or not a lesion is benign or malignant until we remove it.

An Examination is First

Before we remove any lumps or bumps, we are going to perform a thorough examination first. We will start by taking a look at the lump to see if it can be diagnosed before any further process takes place. The lesions will be examined closely, looking at its size, shape, level, color, and mobility. We are also going to examine whether or not it is tender.

If we think there is a chance the bump is going to be malignant, we may refer patients to a medical doctor for a more thorough evaluation. Some of the specialists we may ask to get involved include a dermatologist, oncologist, ENT surgeon, or even a plastic surgeon.

The Removal Process

The vast majority of small lumps and bumps are going to be removed easily. We will be able to get the entirety of the tumor on the first try. At the same time, we may need to take a look at the cells underneath the microscope once the lesion is removed. This is important because it allows us to confirm whether the tumor is benign or malignant. We know that many people are nervous about undergoing an excision. That is why we will make sure that we answer every question before starting any procedure. Typically, the results of the microscopic examination are going to be back within a week.
