Myopia Treatment

Myopia

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common condition that causes blurred distance vision. It most commonly occurs from the eyeball growing too long (axial length), which causes images to focus in front of the retina instead of focusing directly on it. Myopia typically develops in childhood and often continues to progress until early adulthood, resulting in the need for stronger glasses or contact lenses over time.

The inconvenience of needing glasses is not the only concern. High levels of myopia increase the risk of several different eye diseases including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration.

While traditional glasses and contact lenses can correct the optical defocus and allow your child to see clearly, unfortunately they do not help to slow its progression. After decades of research, there are now several effective myopia management options. Typically, the earlier the intervention the better.

MYOPIA Management

Maple Ridge Eye Care is proud to offer Myopia Management as part of our eye care services. Slowing the progression of myopia can help preserve your child’s future vision and improve their chances of maintaining healthy eyes throughout their lifetime.

The Myopia Management consult includes:
● Assessment of risk factors
● Specialized measurement of prescription and evaluation of eye focusing and teaming skills
● Axial length (the distance from the front of eye, the cornea, to the back of eye, the retina) measurements over time
● Counselling and recommendations for treatment
● Developing a treatment plan that works best for your family
