Myopia Control in Kids

Myopia Control

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is one of the more common refractive errors. One out of two people have myopia, and it is characterized by an eye that is longer than normal from front to back. This makes it difficult to see objects at a distance.

Myopia is present at birth, and over the last decade or so, more children have been diagnosed with myopia. There have been no studies to prove this, but many eye doctors believe that there is a link between children spending so much time in front of digital technology and the increasing number of cases. If your child is diagnosed with myopia, our team at Maple Ridge Eye Care can help. There are several treatment options to help control myopia, which will help preserve your child's vision.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops

If you have ever had an eye exam, you have had atropine drops. These are the drops that our optometrist uses to dilate your eyes. These drops can also help control myopia in children. When used in small amounts for two to three years, they can slow the progression of this condition. Because these drops cause blurry vision, they are given at night. These eye drops are safe for children between 5 and 18 years old.

Peripheral Defocus Contact Lenses

Studies have shown that children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old can benefit from these contacts. This is a multifocal contact lens. The middle portion corrects blurry vision and the outer prescription makes your child's peripheral vision blurry. When the side vision is blurry, it can slow the growth of the eye, which will control your child's myopia.
