As part of a comprehensive eye exam at Maple Ridge Eye Care, you will be required to go through a portion of your exam called “pretesting” to give our optometrists an idea of your basic vision needs. To give you a better understanding of what to expect during the pretest, we have provided a list of the examinations that will be performed during this part of your visit.
Pretest Assessments
We have listed some common eye care assessments that will be completed during a pretest, as well as a few details regarding these tests.
1. Autorefraction
The autorefractor is the instrument used for this test: it measures the shape of the front of the eye, the cornea, to help in fitting contact lenses. It also gives an objective measurement to determine your baseline prescription by measuring your eye’s refractive error. Your optometrist will use this data as an estimate of your glasses and/or contact lens prescription and use it as a starting point for your subjective refraction.
2. Visual Field Tests
This screening test is done on one eye at a time and measures how wide of an area your eye can see. The machine maps out your side vision and in doing so aids in the detection of glaucoma, macular degeneration and certain types of brain tumours, all of which are conditions in which visual field loss can occur.
3. Digital Retinal Photos
In this test, a specialized camera takes a digital photo of the retina, which can show many ocular health conditions and is used to help diagnose diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. These high-resolution images also serve as a base line measure for future comparison, as they are taken during each comprehensive eye health examination.
4. NCT Tests
Non-contact tonometry tests are used to determine if you are at risk of developing glaucoma by measuring your intraocular pressure. This test is completed by blowing a puff of air at your eye and measuring how quickly it is reflected towards the machine.
