Early Signs of Glaucoma
Eye health is obviously important. No one wants to lose their ability to see. Unfortunately, many aspects of eye health are still frequently misunderstood. One of those issues is glaucoma. It’s a common issue that can severely impact eye health and even cause blindness, yet very few people know how to identify the symptoms and seek treatment. At Maple Ridge Eye Care in Maple Ridge, our optometrists are very familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. Here is some information that is helpful for the average person to be aware of concerning glaucoma.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an overarching name for a number of eye conditions that can damage your optic nerve. It is one of the leading causes of blindness for anyone who is over the age of 60. While it can happen at any age, it is more common among older adults.
It’s important to understand that vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, so it is vital to treat glaucoma as soon as possible.
Warning Signs
There are a number of symptoms associated with glaucoma, however glaucoma can also present with no signs or symptoms at all. This is why it is so important to have annual or semi-annual dilated eye health exams (based on your age and risk factors). If you do experience any of the following symptoms, it is a good reason to see an eye doctor. If you experience multiple of the following symptoms, get medical help as soon as possible.
- Eye redness
- Halos around lights
- Blurred vision
- Nausea and vomiting
- Eye pain
- Severe headache
Any of these symptoms can also have causes other than glaucoma, which is why it is recommended to have a proper eye examination to determine the issue.
