Contact Lens Health Week is an annual reminder to everyone who wears contact lenses to keep up their daily hygiene routine, for both safety and good vision for life. Every August your optometrists at Maple Ridge Eye Care in Maple Ridge, BC join thousands of optometrists who participate in Contact Lens Health Week. It's a special week of outreach to make sure our patients are aware of best practices for the wear and care of their contact lenses. It's our opportunity to remind you of healthy habits for using contact lenses like the following:

Don't clean your contact lenses with saline, tap water or saliva.

Clean your contact lenses with the disinfectant solution your optometrist recommends. Anything else invites infection. Don't recycle contact lens disinfectant solution. Use a little new disinfectant solution every time you clean your lenses. And never lick your lenses! Your mouth is full of germs.

Don't sleep with your contact lenses on unless your optometrist has given you a prescription for nighttime wear.

There are some situations in which it's healthy and helpful to sleep with your contacts on. But if you haven't been prescribed contact lenses for a specific health reason requiring overnight wear, always take your contacts out before you go to sleep.

Discard dailies after a day.

Daily contact lenses are designed for one-time use. When you have used them for one day, throw them away. Don't try to reuse them because you haven't gotten a refill of your prescription or you are trying to save money. If you have issues with getting daily lenses, speak with your optometrist about alternatives.
