Glaucoma Can Be Diagnosed and Treated at Maple Ridge Eye Care
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, and the symptoms are not noticeable until the disease has advanced. Early detection and treatment are vital for saving the eyesight. Our optometrists here at Maple Ridge Eye Care offer comprehensive eye examinations to help diagnose the presence of glaucoma in the early stages.
What is Glaucoma?
The anterior chamber of your eye is filled with a fluid called aqueous humor that drains through the trabecular meshwork. Glaucoma develops when the trabecular meshwork becomes blocked or can no longer drain the fluid adequately, resulting in the buildup of intraocular pressure (IOP). This pressure damages the optic nerve, eventually leading to blindness if left untreated. There are two main types of glaucoma, which are open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type and occurs when the trabecular meshwork becomes partially blocked. Most people are unaware that they have open-angle because of how slow symptoms developed. Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the drainage channels abruptly close, resulting in rapid increase pressure. This type is a medical emergency.
