How Your Eyes Shed Light on Your Health
If you have recently noticed a change in your vision or have not scheduled an eye appointment in the last year, you should schedule an appointment with our optometrists to ensure your eyes are healthy. They say the eyes are the windows into the soul. Here at Maple Ridge Eye Care, we say that your eyes are the windows into your health. Sudden vision deterioration or odd colors within your eyes can indicate the onset of illness or disease.
Illnesses and Diseases Diagnosed via Your Eyes
Your eyes are often the first part of your body to be affected by illness and disease. This is because the tiny blood vessels and membranes are first to feel the effects of high blood pressure and diabetes as well many other illnesses. If you notice a grey ring around your cornea, you may have high cholesterol. Suddenly drooping eyelids can indicate the onset of myasthenia gravis, which is a disease of the auto-immune system and potentially deadly if left untreated. Homer’s syndrome is first characterized by uneven pupils and slightly droopy eye lids, and it causes tumors and aneurisms in the neck.
High blood pressure can be first diagnosed by looking at the tiny blood vessels in the retina. Kinks and twists in these small veins can indicate a very high risk of stroke, and if hemorrhages are visible in the vessels, you may have high blood sugar and diabetes.
