Protecting Your Vision: Tips from your Maple Ridge Optometrists to Prevent Eye Injuries
Your Maple Ridge optometrists would like to remind you of the importance of protecting your eyes from potential injury. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Research, there were about 36,000 people in 2013 and 2014 who have to visit an emergency room because of eye-related injuries. Here are a few safety tips from Dr. M. Hurlbert, Dr. Gary Matter and their team at Maple Ridge Eye Care concerning eye injury prevention.
Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays
The sun radiates UV rays that can be incredibly hard on the eyes, impairing vision and even causing sudden injury in some cases. Anytime you plan to be outdoors in the sun, make sure you take your sunglasses along with you. Look for sunglasses that clearly are designed for 100 percent UV protection, as these can block the UV rays that are associated with eye problems such as cataracts. If you experience excessive dryness after sunlight exposure, be sure to visit an eye doctor for attention.
Take Caution Around Smoke
Smoke from cigarettes and tobacco can be damaging to your eyes in the long term. However, excessive exposure to smoke can result in immediate damage. If you are exposed to an open fire, or there is a lot of smoke in your work environment, be careful about coming in direct contact with the smoke vapors. Smoke contains chemical compounds that can burn the sensitive eye features.
Always Wear Protective Goggles
There are many employers who require their employees to wear safety glasses while working around moving machinery. Ensure you are wearing safety goggles during certain everyday activities as well. Many eye injuries occur when flying debris comes in contact with the eye, often from usual tasks, such as mowing the lawn or working on a vehicle. Make sure that you keep your eyes protected anytime there is machinery involved, but also if there is a danger of chemicals or fluids splashing onto your face.
