Caring for Your Eyes During Allergy Season
It's that time of year here in beautiful British Columbia where seasonal eye allergies come out in full force! At Maple Ridge Eye Care, our eye doctors are here to offer you some helpful tips and tools to keep your eyes as healthy as possible this spring. Read on to learn more.
Top 5 Ways To Care For Your Eyes This Allergy Season
Do you struggle with itchy, red, burning, watery, and/or dry eye symptoms during the springtime? Fortunately, you don't have to suffer all season long. Check out these 5 helpful tips for managing your eye allergies:
- Avoid scratching, itching, and rubbing your eyes. Stay strong! Dry eye symptoms can be uncomfortable, but if you itch or scratch your eyes, you may damage your delicate ocular tissue or simply spread around the allergens that are causing your discomfort. Don't itch, rub, or scratch your eyes, and always wash your hands before and after touching your eyes.
- Switch from contact lens use to glasses. For some of us, contact lenses may not work well in the springtime, because pollen, dust, and other airborne allergens can become trapped between the lenses and our eyes. To give your eyes a break and to help reduce the severity of your symptoms, consider wearing eyeglasses, at least when your symptoms and the local pollen count is at its worst.
- For a DIY symptom soother, gently press a warm washcloth to your eyes.
- Do what you can to avoid exposure to known allergens as much as possible. If you're allergic to pollen, avoid going outside on days with a high pollen count. If you're allergic to dust and pet dander, keep your house tidy and always wash your hands after petting an animal.
- Schedule an appointment with one of our Maple Ridge eye doctors. We can help you identify the cause of your eye allergies and provide you with helpful treatment--including medications and eye drops--that will quickly and effectively soothe your symptoms.
