Pink Eye
Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, can be triggered by a variety of causes. This eye problem can be easily spread to others, and can affect your vision if not treated. Fortunately, pink eye can be treated with medication. At Maple Ridge Eye Care in Maple Ridge, BC, we offer pink eye treatment to help subdue the symptoms.
What is Pink Eye?
Pink eye occurs when the clear tissue, known as the conjunctiva, that covers the sclera, outer white layer of the eye, becomes inflamed. The reddish or pink appearance that you see on the eye is caused by the inflammation making the blood vessels more noticeable.
Pink Eye Symptoms
People who have pink eye may complain of their eyes being watery, itchy, or burning. They may also experience the following symptoms:
- Producing more tears than normal
- Conjunctiva being swollen
- Blurry vision
- Light sensitivity
- Thick yellow discharge that will crust over the eyes
Causes of Conjunctivitis
Pink eye typically results from a bacterial or viral infection, but an outside irritant can also trigger it. Among the possibilities include:
- An allergic reaction to pollen, dust, or animal dander.
- Using the same contacts for long periods of time, which can result in giant papillary conjunctivitis.
- If a foreign object or a chemical splashes in the eye, pink eye can occur.
Preventing the Infection
Good hygiene practices can prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. This includes:
- Making sure that you don’t touch your eyes with your hands
- Often clean and change pillow cases
- Throw away cosmetics that have been in contact with the eye, such as mascara
- Any personal eye care items should not be shared with anyone
- Ensure that you are washing your hands often
Treatment at Our Optometry Center
Our doctors of optometry can prescribe ointments or antibiotic eye drops to reduce the symptoms. If the infection is caused by a virus, it will probably need to run its course. This can take up to three weeks. However, our doctors can prescribe antiviral medication to help ease the symptoms, if needed to.
