Top 5 Causes of Dry Eye
Dry eye is a chronic condition that can damage the front surface of the eye or affect clear vision. Getting treated right away by our Maple Ridge optometrists at Maple Ridge Eye Care helps to restore the right amount of quality tears, reduce the symptoms and improve eye health.
Not Enough Tears
Tears are necessary to keep the eyes lubricated and provide clear vision. However, when the tear glands in the eyelids stop making enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, dry eye symptoms such as redness, itching, gritty eyes, or blurred vision may develop.
Poor Quality Tears
Good quality tears consist of three layers: oil, water, and mucus. They moisturize and nourish the front surface of the eye, distribute tears evenly and prevent evaporation. Any deficiencies in these functions can cause symptoms. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a common reason why the eyes do not provide adequate moisture.
Air Pollutants or Environment
During an eye care exam, our optometry specialists may determine that your symptoms are due to environmental conditions. Dry or windy climates or persistent exposure to smoke are known to cause tears to dry faster than normal. Another environmental factor is less frequent blinking, for example, when using a computer.
Age
The natural aging process is linked to eye dryness. People aged 50 and over have a higher risk of developing dryness symptoms, mainly due to diminished tear production. They may also experience eye discharge and eye fatigue.
Medical Conditions
Loss of eye moisture is more likely to occur in people with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or inverted eyelids. Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelids is also linked to this condition. A comprehensive eye exam can help our optometrists determine if your symptoms are linked to any of these conditions.
