The village of Roslyn, which is located in the town of North Hempstead, is home to a number of important landmarks, as well as being a vibrant community today. The village was originally known as Hempstead Harbor, but the name was changed in the mid-19th century due to problems with postal deliveries, as Hempstead Harbor was confused for other locations in Long Island with Hempstead in the name. After consideration of all the potential names, Roslyn was selected. The name was allegedly submitted by a man who thought there was a resemblance between the village and the town of Roslin in Scotland.
Some of the key landmarks in Roslyn include the Bryant Library, the oldest library in Nassau County. It was begun by poet William Cullen Bryant in 1874 and still functions as a significant part of the community. Bryant’s original home, known as Cedarmere, is also a local attraction that has been maintained as a historical museum. Another part of Bryant’s original estate was sold to the prominent Frick family in 1919. The mansion and surrounding area of the Frick property now is home to the Nassau County Museum of Art. Perhaps the most visible landmark in Roslyn is the clock tower, at the intersection of Main Street and Old Northern Boulevard. The tower, built in 1895, finished a lengthy restoration process in 2006.
