Eye Exams FAQs

Eye Exams FAQs

Eye exams are a practical and effective means of protecting your eye health and vision. At Village Optical, we offer comprehensive eye exams and eye care services for your entire family. These FAQs from our New Hyde Park optometrist explain more about the importance of eye exams.

.

Why do I need a routine eye exam if I have good vision?

Eye exams are not only for monitoring your visual acuity. They also monitor your eye health to detect signs of eye diseases and conditions like dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts that can impair your sight. Some diseases don’t show early symptoms. They can, however, be detected during an eye exam so you can get appropriate treatment before losing precious sight.

Routine eye exams can also detect gradual changes in your vision to ensure you’re seeing as well as you should.

How often should I have a vision exam?

If you have refractive errors in your vision, we recommend annual eye exams to monitor changes in your sight. People over 40 should have annual eye exams to keep track of possible eye diseases. If you have no problems with your vision, you can see your optometrist every other year to monitor your sight.

At what age should my child start eye exams?

The American Optometric Association recommends children have their first eye checkup between 6-12 months of age. A more in-depth exam can be given at three years of age and again at the age of five, right before your child starts school.

What’s the difference between “routine” eye exams and “comprehensive” eye exams?

Routine exams are designed to assess the clarity of your vision and are simpler in nature, like vision screenings. Comprehensive eye exams are more complex and involve a variety of tests to evaluate your visual acuity, eye focus and movement, as well as eye health for early warning signs of eye diseases.

What happens at an eye exam?

After reviewing your medical history, our optometrist will conduct tests to check your visual acuity. These tests will determine if you have refractive errors that require prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses to improve your vision. We’ll also test your eye health for problems with dry eye, glaucoma, or other eye diseases.
