Contact Lens Exams

Contact Lens Exams at Our New Hyde Park Optometry Center

The days when people only had one option for correcting their refractive errors are long gone. Today you can choose from eyeglasses, contact lenses, and corrective surgery to achieve your desired clarity of vision. But different eyes have different needs, and your contact lenses must match up properly with your prescription, ocular health, lifestyle, and eye structure. That's why you'll want to schedule a contact lens exam here at our New Hyde Park optometry center: Village Optical.

Contact Lens Exams

How Our Optometrist Ensures the Best Fit for Your Needs

Why are contact lens exams a must? The tests you receive in a comprehensive eye exam only tell us your eye prescription. While this information is sufficient for making high-quality eyeglasses, it doesn't provide us with the details we need to choose and order your ideal pair of contact lenses. These tiny devices must sit directly on the delicate tissues of your eyes in perfect alignment with your eye's dimensions and corneal curvature. Contact lens exams give our optometrist the chance to measure your irises, pupils, and corneas as precisely as possible, ensuring a safe, comfortable fit.

Contact lens exams don't just help us measure you for contacts; they also help us select the right type of contacts for your needs. Not everyone can simply pick out a standard pair of soft, single-use lenses and enjoy satisfactory results. Some conditions and situations call for special consideration. Examples include:

  • Dry eye, which can often be made worse by standard-issue soft contacts
  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis, an irritation caused by sensitivity to the debris that accumulates on some contacts
  • Strong or complex vision prescriptions that can't be adequately corrected by generic contact lenses
  • Corneal abnormalities such as keratoconus or extreme astigmatism

How you wish to use your contacts will also factor into what kind of contacts you need. For instance, single-use contacts aren't meant to be worn for extended periods, so if you want to wear your contacts overnight, you'll need extended-wear contacts especially made for that purpose.

Our Optician Provides a Variety of Contact Lens Options

Once you've had your contact lens exam, our optician will order your contact lenses. In addition to single-use and extended-wear lenses, we offer soft contacts, rigid gas permeable contacts, Toric or scleral contacts for corneal irregularities, and multifocal contacts for conditions such as presbyopia.
