Hyperopia

Hyperopia

Hyperopia, aka farsightedness, is a common refractive error. This condition makes it easy to see objects in the distance, but closeup objects are difficult to see. Fortunately, Dr. Krasnoff at Village Optical in New Hyde Park, NY, can treat this refractive error, allowing you to see clearly at any distance.

.

Who Is at Risk for Hyperopia?

Hyperopia is present at birth and often runs in families. If one of your parents has hyperopia, there is a chance that you will get it too. If both of your parents have hyperopia, your chances of being born with it are even higher.

The Symptoms of Hyperopia

The symptoms of hyperopia include the following:

  • Closeup objects appear blurry
  • Needing to squint to see clearly
  • Eyestrain symptoms (burning and aching around the eyes)
  • Headaches after doing close-up work such as reading, writing, drawing, and computer work.
  • Needing to hold reading material further away to see it better.

Diagnosing Hyperopia

This condition can easily be diagnosed during your annual eye exam. The refraction testing will determine if you have hyperopia or another refractive error such as myopia or astigmatism.

Hyperopia Treatment

There are a few treatment options for hyperopia. The option that's best for you will depend on the severity of your condition and your lifestyle.

  • Eyeglasses: Eyeglasses are the most common treatment for hyperopia.
  • Contact lenses: Contacts are a great alternative to eyeglasses. Contacts provide a more natural appearance, and your vision won't be obstructed with an eyeglass frame or dirty lenses. Contacts are great for athletes and active people.
  • LASIK surgery: LASIK is a surgical procedure that gently reshapes the cornea and corrects your vision.
  • Ortho-K: Ortho-K is a special type of contact lens and it is a great option for patients who aren't a good candidate for LASIK. These contact lenses are only worn at night. While you are sleeping, the lens reshapes your cornea. When you wake up in the morning, you will see clearly all day. The contacts must be worn every night to provide clear vision throughout the day.
