The town was established when the Lenape Indians signed a treaty with John Carman and Robert Fordham in 1643. The city was initially called Heemstede. Several of Hempstead's original 50 patentees were Dutch, suggesting that Hempstead might have been named after the Dutch town and castle Heemstede, which are near the cities of Haarlem and Amsterdam.
