Eyeglasses FAQs

Eyeglasses FAQs

If you’ve never worn eyeglasses before, it’s only natural to have questions about what kind of glasses to buy. At Erie Optical, we can guide you towards the right glasses for your prescription, lifestyle, and budget. These FAQs from your Mentor optometrist provide the answers you need to make wise eyeglass buying decisions.

Glasses

If I Just Need Glasses for Reading, Can’t I Just Buy a Cheap Pair at My Local Pharmacy?

Drugstore readers may work for some people, but they aren’t the best at correcting refractive errors in your sight. Through an eye exam, our Mentor eye doctor can accurately evaluate visual acuity in each eye to give you the most precise prescription for correcting your sight. Eye exams are also used to detect early warning signs of “silent” eye diseases, like glaucoma, which don’t usually display symptoms until after damage is done to your eyes. Early detection of eye diseases can help prevent vision loss.

What Are the Criteria for Selecting a Pair of Eyeglasses?

Your eyeglasses should be functional, attractive, and comfortable, especially if you have to wear them all the time. Look for glasses that appeal to you as an individual, enhance your appearance, and suit your lifestyle. Our Mentor optometrist can help you select frames that are best suited to the shape of your face, skin, and hair color. We’ll also match you with lenses best suited to your prescription and lifestyle so you benefit from both quality vision and longevity.

What Are Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses darken when you go out in the sun, enabling your prescription eyeglasses to double as sunglasses. Once you come out of the sun, the lenses return to normal. Photochromic lenses are convenient for people who spend a lot of time in the sun, as they don’t have to buy a separate pair of prescription sunglasses.

When Should I Change Glasses?

Your optometrist will let you know if there are major changes in your prescription after an eye exam. He may recommend upgrading your lenses so your glasses continue to give you optimal sight. You may also want to change glasses to vary your appearance or to correspond with changes in your lifestyle.

Should I Get Bifocals?

If you’re over 40, have presbyopia, or have problems with your near and far vision, your eye doctor may recommend you use bifocals to correct your sight. You can discuss this option with your optometrist after your eye exam.

  • ""I have been going to Erie Optical for 3 years now. My sister referred me to Dr. Waldman after her great experience with him and the office. We had a previous eye doctor and the experience was not good and they charged so much. So when I went to Erie Optical I was so pleased with the office and Dr. Waldman's expertise and thoroughness. I ended up referring my parents and grandmother to Erie Optical too. I will never going anywhere else!!!""
