The Importance of Routine Exams

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam with our Mentor Optometrist

Woman in Mentor, OH getting an eye exam

A comprehensive eye exam will take about an hour and involve a variety of tests. At Erie Optical in Mentor, Ohio, Dr. Robert Waldman has over 35 years of experience assessing the eye health of his patients.

In a visual acuity test, patients will read an eye chart to determine how well they can see. During a cover test, an optometrist determines if the eyes are aligned. An ocular motility test sees how well your eyes can follow an object, which may impact reading ability and cause eye strain. They also check for color blindness, which can indicate the presence of eye disease in older patients. An eye doctor will look to see if any eye diseases are present, with the help of pupil dilations and up-close examinations of the eyes.

Afterwards, your optometrist will know everything about your eyes- from the glasses prescription you may need to any possible conditions they will treat.

What Conditions Do Optometrists Screen For?

Optometrists both check for visual acuity as well as eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and detached retinas.

How Do Eye Exams Differ for Ages?

Eye exams change as a person gets older. Younger children need good eyesight in order to perform their best in school. They will also be tested to see how well their eyes work together and track objects.

Older adults need to check their eyes more frequently because they are at a higher risk for contracting eye disease. Conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy increase drastically as a person ages. After the age of 60, preserving your vision becomes even more important.

Why Regular Eye Exams are Important

Annual eye exams are critical to your continued eye health. A skilled optometrist has the tools to detect and manage a myriad of eye diseases and other conditions, which are definitely easier to treat and manage when they are discovered early. Prevention, through comprehensive eye exams, is crucial.

  • ""I have been going to Erie Optical for 3 years now. My sister referred me to Dr. Waldman after her great experience with him and the office. We had a previous eye doctor and the experience was not good and they charged so much. So when I went to Erie Optical I was so pleased with the office and Dr. Waldman's expertise and thoroughness. I ended up referring my parents and grandmother to Erie Optical too. I will never going anywhere else!!!""
