Toric Lenses

Find Your Right Fit for Toric Lenses at Overlake EyeCare

Toric lenses are a special type of contact lens that helps correct many of the issues associated with astigmatism. The power of the lens is actually in its shape. Unlike a regular contact lens, which has a surface you can liken to a sphere, the toric lens has the look of a donut on its side, and is geometrically shaped. Here at Overlook Eye Care in Bellevue, our eye doctors work with patients to help find the right toric lens to improve the patient’s vertical and horizontal refractive vision.

Types of Astigmatism

Generally, when people think about astigmatism they think of it as an angular or one dimensional condition. There are, in fact, several types of astigmatisms. The specific type of eye condition you have is the deeming factor in regard to the type of toric lens your optometry professionals will fit you with. The types of astigmatism include lenticular astigmatism, corneal astigmatism, and regular astigmatism.

Finding the Right Fit

Finding the right fit is crucial when it comes to toric lenses. You have to consider the type of astigmatism you have, as each type has a different curvature. You need to also consider that fitting toric contact lenses is a little more involved than it would be if you were being fitted for regular contact lenses. The reason for this is that toric lenses have to be placed in a specific area of the eye and you have to be able to tolerate them for extended periods of time. Any slippage of a toric lens will cause a disruption in the axis of the lens and interfere with the clarity of your vision.

Types of Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contact lenses can be used to correct several conditions of the eye outside of astigmatism and although they have marked differences in comparison to regular contacts, toric lenses offer some of the same features that can be found in regular contacts. You can choose disposable or regular toric lenses. You also have the option of choosing colored lenses. Our eye care doctors can fit you for hard RGP or soft RGP lenses.
