Answering your Questions about Macular Degeneration

Our doctors and optometry team at Overlake EyeCare in Bellevue know that age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one the leading causes of loss of vision among people over the age of 60. We want you to know the most important step in preventing eye disease is an annual or semi-annual exam that enables us to spot issues like AMD.

.

What Causes AMD?

Macular Degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central region or macula of the retina. The macula enables proper focus in the central vision of your eyes. When the macula begins to degenerate, so does your ability to read, see objects in detail, drive, and even recognize colors or faces.

What’s the Difference in Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration?

  • Dry macular degeneration– This is a common form of this eye disease. Happens when blood vessels do not leak in the eyes. It may cause an issue with only one eye, but in most causes issues for both.
  • Wet macular degeneration–Wet macular degeneration occurs when irregular blood vessels develop in the eye and leak either blood, other fluids, or both into the macula.

Can Macular Degeneration be Prevented?

While not preventable, there are several ways to slow the progression of AMD. Some simple steps to take include:

  • Sunglasses to guard your eyes against the sun's damaging UV rays
  • Healthy exercise and diet.
  • Be aware of risk factors such as that high cholesterol levels, obesity, genetics, and coronary heart disease place you at greater risk for developing AMD.
  • Quit Smoking! Smokers who have early AMD or more likely to develop advanced AMD than non- smokers.

Can Macular Degeneration be Treated?

While Macular Degeneration cannot be cured, it can there are ways in which it can be treated. Treatment is used to address the symptoms and slow the progression. Some options that may be recommended are vitamins, daily care routine for your eyes, contacts or glasses, or even surgery could be an option.
