Finding Orthokeratology in Birmingham

Orthokeratology is a non-surgical LASIK alternative that is completely safe for adults and children. In fact, Corneal Reshaping has been proven to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.

Orthokeratology is not a new treatment; however, it is getting a lot more press lately as technological advances have made it easier to create Orthokeratology lenses.

The Corneal Reshaping process relies on custom-made contact lenses that alter the shape of the cornea while you sleep. In the morning, the lenses are removed. Due to the new shape of the surface of your eye, you have clear vision without daytime glasses or contact lenses! Many individuals who have dry eyes that are unable to tolerate traditional daytime soft contact lenses are able to wear these lenses comfortably.

Unlike LASIK, Orthokeratology is completely reversible! If you stop wearing the lenses overnight, your vision will return to the way it was before you tried Corneal Reshaping. Thus, you may get Orthokeratology lenses from our optometrist in Birmingham as a way to correct vision in adults or  prevent your child's vision from worsening.

Because Corneal Reshaping is a non-surgical procedure, your eyes will not be damaged by the lenses. With eye surgery like LASIK or PRK, there is always a risk of damage to the eye tissue due to the laser beam. Many patients experience uncomfortable side effects after LASIK, including dry eye and a weakening of the cornea.

Candidates For Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is safe for patients of all ages. Whether you have children who are too young for corrective eye surgery, or you are an older adult who does not want to try eye surgery, Corneal Reshaping can be an effective treatment for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (the need for reading glasses). Our Vestavia (and Hoover) optometrist has used orthokeratology successfully to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and myopia and even presbyopia.
