Painless Procedure

This painless procedure conducted by a Board- Certified eye doctor usually takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes per eye with the entire office visit probably lasting for 90 minutes. After a mild sedative is given pre-op, you will remain awake while eye drops will be instilled to numb each eye. Your eyelids will then be cleaned, and your eye will be held open with an eye speculum. A very small “flap” will then be made in your cornea using a microkeratome with a tiny blade (or, a specialized type of laser can be used called a femtosecond laser without creating a flap.) If a flap is created, it is then lifted back to expose the underlying corneal stromal layer.

In both methods, an examiner laser is then used to remove a pre-determined and computer -controlled amount of corneal tissue to reshape the cornea. Then, the flap is replaced back over the area where the corneal tissue has been removed. The LASIK procedure usually involves flattening the cornea to correct nearsightedness, steepening the cornea for farsightedness and smoothing it to make it more regular in astigmatism.

Who Would be a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Good candidates for the LASIK procedure include those with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and those with astigmatism (irregular cornea.)

How can Our Ophthalmologist Determine if You’re a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Our ophthalmologist at Eastside Eye Physicians will ask you about any eye conditions you have and will conduct a comprehensive baseline eye exam to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK. Your eye doctor will determine the shape and thickness of your cornea, your pupil size, and your refractive error. Your tear film and corneal topography will also determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK.

How Can an Ophthalmologist Help You After Surgery?

After your LASIK surgery, your ophthalmologist may prescribe eye drops for any post-op burning or watering of the eyes that you may have. A post-op exam is usually conducted 24-48 hours after your LASIK procedure to treat any post-op issues you may have.
