What Is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK stands for “Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis” and is a popular surgical procedure to correct vision problems.  It is a common treatment for patients that are farsighted, nearsighted, or have astigmatism. LASIK works by reshaping the cornea so that your eyes can properly focus and see more clearly.

Is It Safe And Does It Work?

LASIK has been used successfully for more than 25 years.  96% of patients will see a marked improvement in vision after LASIK surgery.

Is It Painful?

Your LASIK surgeon will use numbing drops and there is typically very little pain.  There are no shots or additional sedation required. Some patients report slight discomfort in the first day or two.

What Happens During The Procedure?

During LASIK eye surgery, a thin flap is created in the cornea.  This flap is peeled back, and the underlying corneal tissue is then reshaped with a laser.  Once reshaped, the corneal flap is put back in place.  The procedure itself is typically painless and can take as little as 10 minutes.

Does It Work Immediately?

You will an immediate improvement within the first few days following the procedure.  Healing is very quick.  While your vision may be blurry for a day, most patients see improved vision within a day or two.  Your reshaped cornea allows you to properly focus light on your eye’s retina.

Will I Be Able To Get Rid Of My Glasses Or Contacts?

Most patients will notice a significant reduction in the need to use corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses.  Some, but not all patients, will no longer need to use glasses or contact lenses.  Laser refractive surgery can help you improve your eyesight, but it will not prevent you from needing reading glasses as you reach middle age.

Are There Side Effects?

While rare, a small number of patients have reported glare, halos around images, difficulty driving at night, dry eye, and inconsistent vision.

Will LASIK Help Everyone?

LASIK is not for everyone.  If you suffer from severe dry eye, a corneal disease, or certain other conditions, you may not be a candidate.

Who Can Perform LASIK Surgery?

Your eyesight is too important to risk.  Work with experienced, board-certified Ophthalmologist.  Look for an expert that is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
