When you get older, your eyes might develop a cloudiness on the lenses known as cataracts. This condition might not cause much of a problem at first, but it can seriously affect your vision over time. At Eastside Eye Physicians, we provide Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery at multiple facilities to help you maintain a healthy vision after cataract surgery.

Cataracts often develop due to changes that occur in the eye during the aging process. The tissue inside the eye lens breaks down and turns into clumps that end up clouding your vision. This generally starts out as cloudiness that only affects a small part of the lens, but it can gradually get bigger and cause more serious vision impairments. Your risk of having cataracts form is higher as you age. Other risk factors include having diabetes, high blood pressure or other medical conditions, being obese, having too much exposure to sunlight and bring a smoker. Eye injuries can also raise your risk of having cataracts.

Symptoms of Cataracts

As cataracts cover larger parts of your lens, you might develop cloudiness or blurred vision. You might find that you have more trouble seeing at night and that your eyes are more sensitive to glare. Other symptoms of cataracts include seeing a halo effect around lighting, seeing colors as more faded or yellowish or needing to have brighter lighting to read. Keep in mind that these symptoms might be minor at first, but they tend to become worse over time.

Treatment for Cataracts from Our Ophthalmologist

When you are diagnosed with cataracts, wearing stronger prescription eyeglasses might help correct your vision until the cloudiness gets worse. Taking other steps, such as using a magnifying glass for reading, wearing sunglasses to reduce glare and making the lighting in your home brighter can also help. When you have severe cloudiness, our ophthalmologist will discuss cataract surgery with you. This is a common and safe procedure that involves removing clouded lenses and replacing them with artificial ones, which restores clear vision.

Cataract Prevention

You can't lower your risk for cataracts just by having routine eye exams. Managing your health may help decrease your risk, but the treatment for cataracts is Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery when your vision from the cataract interferes with your daily living activities.
