Vision Exams for Senior Citizens

Our clinic is proud to serve patients from infancy through age 99+. If you are a senior citizen, an annual comprehensive examination will help to ensure that you have the best chance of preventing disease, managing your prescription, and maintaining the overall health of your vision.

As we age, early diagnosis and management of optical disease is very important. The risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, which are the top three eye diseases in senior citizens, increases with age:

Cataracts: Eventually, everybody will develop cataracts, it’s just a matter of when. Though cataracts do not damage the eye, they may slowly cause your vision to blur. During your annual eye exam, we monitor your cataract growth, so that we can determine the optimal time for their removal.

Glaucoma: As we age, the risk of glaucoma increases, though there are no symptoms. During your annual exam, we can monitor your risk and catch glaucoma as early as possible. Early diagnosis contributes to timely intervention and treatment.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): The leading cause of vision loss in seniors is AMD. Wearing UV eye protection and eating a diet high in green, leafy vegetables may help decrease your risk of AMD. And, since cigarette smokers have a 300% increased risk of developing AMD, doing anything possible to stop smoking, will help, too.

The Importance of Geriatric Optometry

Later in life, vision can degrade quickly if disease is not caught at an early stage. Geriatric optometry relies on a number of specialized tools to mitigate the negative outcomes of a variety of eye conditions, from serious disease to simple vision problems.

Glasses, Cataracts, and Other Visual Assistance

Whether you have cataracts or simply need a new pair of glasses, we will help guide you to whatever you need. Our optical staff will help you choose a frame that’s perfect for you, or, we can refer you to the best professionals in the Tampa area for cataract surgery and management.
