Optometrist Examining A Patient For Dry Eye

What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is caused by a certain part of the tear not working in one or both eyes. Certain conditions cause the tears to stop working.

Different Possible Conditions that Cause Dry Eyes

There are several things that can cause dry eye. Dry eye can be caused by conditions like diabetes, thyroid issues, rheumatoid arthritis, age, gender, certain medications, and environmental factors. Women have a higher chance of developing dry eye. Changes in hormones from menopause, pregnancy, and oral contraceptives can make a woman more susceptible to dry eye. People over 65 years old usually have several symptoms of dry eye.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of dry eye include heavy eyes, blurred vision, burning sensation, sore eyes, itchy eyes, the eyes feeling dry, fatigued eyes, red eyes, and more. Contact us as soon as possible for an appointment so that we can examine, diagnose, and treat your dry eyes.

Regular Eye Exams

Having regular eye exams can help detect the symptoms of dry eye, which can then be treated. Comprehensive eye exams can help us detect eye issues early before they become serious. Make an appointment to have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year so that we can make sure your eyes are healthy and so that we can treat any conditions early on.

The Schirmer's Test will be performed if we think you have dry eye syndrome. We will place numbing drops in your eyes, so wear glasses and not contacts. A special paper strip will then be placed on your bottom eyelid. You will then be asked to close your eyes for about five minutes. Once the five minutes are up, we will remove the strips and measure the amount of moisture on each strip. If there is a low amount of moisture on the strips, we will then treat you for dry eye.

Treatment Options for Dry Eye

There are several treatment options for dry eye syndrome. These include eye drops, punctal plugs, medications, and even surgery may be recommended. Please contact us for more information on how we treat dry eye syndrome.
